Brevard County Board of Commissioners Present Supervisor of Elections Lori Scott and Staff with Resolution

RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, the 2012 Elections represents the busiest year that the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections Office has had in 20 years, with a Presidential Preference Primary Election in January, Redistricting in May, a Primary Election in August and the General Election in November; and

 Supervisor Scott and her staff accept the resolution.

WHEREAS, Brevard County is the 8th largest county in Florida for voting population with over 382,000 registered voters and is typically in the top 5 Counties for voter turnout with 75% of the eligible voters casting votes in the 2012 General Election; and

WHEREAS, Brevard County has seen an increase of approximately 30,000 voters in the 4 years since the last Presidential General Election; and


WHEREAS, undertaking a task of this magnitude could not be achieved without the  work of the full time staff of 25 people alone, the Elections Office relied heavily on the amazing hard work of the 1,876 poll workers on Election Day and the many interim workers who assisted staff in accomplishing the enormous task of receiving, opening, sorting then tabulating the 90,493 absentee ballots for the General Election, participating in the revamped call center that fielded thousands of phone calls from citizens, assisting voters who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities and helping to contribute to countless work hours this year; and

 

WHEREAS, in anticipation of increased waits to vote due to a first ever, two page ballot, the Elections Office entered into a new partnership with Brevard County Public Libraries expanding from 5 Early Voting locations to 8 including the Melbourne, Melbourne Beach, DeGroodt libraries, over 51,000 Brevard residents took advantage of this opportunity; and

 
WHEREAS,
when added to the overwhelming absentee/mail ballots returned, over 49% of Brevard County citizens had voted BEFORE Election Day; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Lori Scott, Brevard County Supervisor of Elections, staff performed their statutory duties and responsibilities, sometimes working through the night, in an exemplarily fashion that other counties across this state should emulate; and

 

WHEREAS, the Elections Office was a model of professionalism throughout the 2012 Elections and continues to be source of pride for the citizens of Brevard County.

NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved, that the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners does hereby recognize and commend the hard work and dedication of

 

LORI SCOTT SUPERVISOR OF ELECTIONS, ELECTIONS STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS

 

and expresses appreciation to all the volunteers and staff who serve a vital role in the community by their commitment to providing exceptional service to the citizens of Brevard County.
